The Big Sky Astronomy Club Observatory

After our initial excitement subsided following the selection of the site and our subsequent discussions with the Forest Service and the ski area owners, we were faced with a harsh reality - the club had a serious lack of monetary resources with which to turn our plan into reality.

And, to complicate matters, although our club was incorporated in the State of Montana as a non-profit entity, we did not have 501(c)(3) status with the Internal Revenue Service. Consequently, we weren't able to take advantage of the tax-exempt status that the 501(c)(3) designation imparts.

In the spring of 2011, the club applied with the IRS for 501(c)(3) status. On June 30, 2011 we excitedly received word that the Big Sky Astronomy Club had been granted its status as a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt, non-profit, charitable corporation. With our elevated status, we are now able to more easily pursue funding, through tax-deductible donations, club-sponsored fund-raising activities and perhaps, even, a grant.

The club is in the initial planning stages for a fundraising drive that will allow us to fulfill our "dream".
